It’s 1956, and fifteen-year-old Socrates “Sock” Guevara enters San Francisco’s Pacific High School with a problem: he can’t stop asking questions. He needs others who will share his thoughts.

     He soon discovers classmates whose different races, cultures, religions, and histories give them very different ways of seeing the world.

     Before long, Sock has gathered them into a circle of young philosophers whose lunchtime conversations range far beyond schoolwork—to evolution, religion, race, morality, American ideals, and the mysteries of the human mind.

     Together, they begin questioning some of the comfortable assumptions of their time—and stirring things up in their little high school world.
